Most, if not all, non-government organizations are working to get themselves out of a job - and Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) is not an exception to the norm. The foundation provides for a simple yet effective and efficient solution for combating malaria in over 35 countries in Africa particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and South America - long-lasting insecticide-treatment mosquito nets.

Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease, affects over half a billion people with a million death toll every year, of which 700,000 are children under 5 years old. Majority (90%) of the deaths come from sub-Saharan Africa, thus, the AMF's focus on the area.

AMF typically receives proposals from a local organization working in the affected area for the bed nets. Once the proposal is approved, the foundation then purchases and ships the nets to the partner organization for local distribution. It is a set-up that works for both the AMF and the local organizations concerned in many ways. For example, MF maintains just 2-3 full-time staff members to run the operations, thus, ensuring that majority of the donations are actually used for the purchase, shipment, and distribution of the mosquito nets to the ultimate beneficiaries.

The foundation also keeps its costs down by buying the lowest possible price for the mosquito nets without sacrificing the quality including their efficacy. Other methods that AMF uses to ensure the highest efficiency in operations include the conduct of comprehensive surveys of the area prior to net distribution and the implementation of a pro bono distribution system. Basically, the staff identifies areas with high malaria incidence yet with a high possibility for achieving universal coverage.

The result: Bringing malaria cases down and, in the process, savings more lives, perhaps even saving an entire community from preventable deaths.

With the likes of AMF, we may yet see a malaria-free world! So donate to the foundation and see where your donation can make a difference in the lives of people.
