Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder that attacks the nerve cells, also known as neurons. It results in memory loss and drastic changes in the patient’s thinking and language skills, as well as behavior. Unfortunately, many individuals are affected by this disease globally. It is among the health problems that affect not only the patients themselves but their entire families, too. Thus, finding help and assistance in the form of a caring organization is one of the things that such families can be thankful for.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or AFA is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide optimal services and care to individuals and families who currently fight against dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. They do this by bringing together the efforts and expertise of member organizations that are equally dedicated to helping improve the patients and their families’ way of life.

AFA was established by a consortium of various organizations with an aim to fill the gap that used to be apparent on a national level in order to aid in assuring the quality of care and service to people with Alzheimer’s disease and related health problems. Aside from the patients, families and caregivers are also provided appropriate assistance and resources.

AFA unites over 1,600 member organizations in different parts of the country. All of these organizations are committed to meeting the social, emotional, educational, and practical needs of patients and the involved parties. As a whole, AFA aims to help eliminate the denial and fear associated with the disease and other related disorders. They also have programs that promote early detection which may lead to proper and prompt treatment. They also initiate better utilization of community resources and ultimately, help improve the standard of life of those involved, in general.

AFA works through receiving donations that fund their toll-free helpline and most of their programs and services. Furthermore, they also maintain strategic partnerships that help them fund research for treatment and cure of Alzheimer’s disease.
