American Cancer Society: Encouraging Hope, Promoting Cure
Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality today. It is a disease that threatens a lot of people, whether young or old. One will never know when it will hit him. He will never know when the doctor would put a deadline to his life. But with the American Cancer Society, cancer is just another trial that a patient can definitely survive through.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) has goals that boil down to an ultimate vision: to eliminate cancer. It is a voluntary health organization that has been operating nationwide since 1913 when it was founded by 15 businessmen and physicians. Back then, the organization’s name was American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC).
ACS operates in over 900 offices nationwide. It also has offices in Puerto Rico. Its home office is located in Atlanta, Georgia, in the American Cancer Society Center.
The organization’s activities and projects vary in nature, but everything is geared towards the propagation of knowledge about the disease and eventually, its prevention and elimination. The ACS supports researchers by providing grants. It also runs public health promotion campaigns. It also organizes events and projects such as the Great American Smokeout and the Relay for Life. Moreover, the society also runs thrift stores to help raise money for its activities and projects.
The society also has an interactive website which interested parties can visit. Through the ACS website, one can learn more about cancer – its symptoms, causes and prevention. There is also a page dedicated for the propagation of tips and advices on how one can stay healthy. Cancer patients can also seek and find help through the website. Ultimately, those who wish to volunteer, support and donate to the charity can also do so through this website.
As of late, the American Cancer Society is named one of Forbes’ top 10 largest charities in the United States.
