Camp Kudzu, a State of Georgia-based non-profit organization, is considered as the state’s single largest resource for Type 1 diabetes mellitus self-management education, outside of hospitals, clinics and medical centers. Its avowed mission is the empowerment and education of kids and their families living with the chronic degenerative disease via a wide range of year-round programs including summer camps, teen retreats, family weekends, and adventure trips, among others.

While the focus of these programs is on fun and enjoyment, the lessons imparted and learned among the kids are crucial to their long-term health particularly in the effective management of their symptoms. Studies have shown that children who have diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes or who have been considered as high risk for it will benefit from access to reliable and relevant diabetes management education. These children are more likely to reduce their risks from diabetes-related complication and increase their emotional resilience in coping with their condition.

Indeed, the power of Camp Kudzu’s programs is transformative in nature. Children who have undergone the programs attest to their joy, hope and confidence gained in their young lives with experiences, lessons and friendships that encourage them to reach for their dreams.
