Founded in 1874, the Charleston Animal Society has remained committed to its mission – the prevention of cruelty against animals. Today, the society is the largest animal rescue organization in South Carolina, a feat that serves the animals well.

In line with its mission, the non-profit organization combats animal cruelty by using scientifically-based innovative strategies including a free roaming cat program, a large-scale neuter and spay program, and educational outreach programs as well as a pets’ food bank. The society also works with government agencies including police departments and law enforcement bodies in ensuring that the existing anti-animal cruelty laws are implemented accordingly.

The Charleston Animal Society also adopts a no kill strategy, which it implements in various ways including finding appropriate permanent homes for homeless animals. This is done through foster homes and eventually adoptions.

It is also known for its innovative, effective and efficient trap, vaccinate, alter and return to native habitat program. Basically, the organization reaches out to the community in dealing with cat colonies in a more humane manner including implementing ways to prevent reproduction.
