They may be known globally for writing and performing
award-winning music, but British alternative rock band Coldplay
has more depth than just MTV appearances or sold-out concerts.
Made up of frontman and keyboardist Chris Martin, bass
guitarist Guy Berryman, guitarist Jonny Buckland and drummer Will Champion,
Coldplay has been one of the staunchest and most active supporters of Oxfam International. Oxfam, one of the world's largest non-profit
organizations working with over 90 countries, aims to alleviate poverty,
improve living conditions, attain equality and works against injustice through
its many different programs.
Coldplay has been
campaigning for Oxfam in over 50 countries, with a focus on the Make Trade Fair, which lobbies for change in trade laws
that further put the poor at a disadvantage. The band's efforts have included
meeting with local farmers and government officials alike in various countries
to learn more about trade problems and how best to address these, a signature
campaign that pushes the program and concert for Oxfam. Coldplay has also
continued to encourage their fans and media supporters to take up the cause,
proving that “Viva La Vida” can be more than just the lyrics to a top-rated
song.
