In 1947, Carrie Estelle Doheny founded and funded the Doheny Eye Institute as a place where doctors and scientists can come together for the benefit of patients with vision disorders. In the institute, scientists can carry out breakthrough research in the prevention, treatment, and cure of vision-related diseases while doctors can offer advanced treatments. Today, the institute serves thousands of patients in the Los Angeles metropolitan area as well as in other parts of the country and the world through these aspects of its operations.

Indeed, the Doheny Eye Institute is well-known in the science and medicine fields because of the gains it has made in yielding vision-saving discoveries through basic and clinical research. The institute has also established partnerships with several other organizations toward the service of humanity’s vision. For example, it partnered with UCLA to create the Doheny Eye Center UCLA, which has locations in Arcadia, Pasadena, and Orange County.
