In every corner of the world, there is always someone who is hungry. Hungry for love, for food, for the basic things in life. It is for this reason that various organizations were created to assist those who are in dire need of these things.

One of the groups that heeded the call of humankind for relief and emergency operations is Food for the Hungry. Also referred to as FH, this international non-profit organization has operations in more than 20 countries and has fed millions of hungry souls. Compared to other non-profit groups, this Phoenix Arizona-based organization is rooted on the works of Christ and is a charter member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. The group functions under their banner: “To walk with leaders, churches and families in overcoming all forms of human poverty by living in healthy relationship with God and His creation.”

Among the known impact this organization has made to the world are their relief efforts in the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, The Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Mozambique. The group sponsors children in Ethiopia and provides them with basic needs, they have installed water pumps in Congo and has sent out aid in Haiti when Hurricane Isaac hit the area.

The group also has people mobilized to bring awareness and prevention and care activities about HIV/AIDS in developing countries like Nigeria, Haiti, Mozambique and Ethiopia. These groups are quite smaller compared to the food distribution and development programs of the organization.

Funding of the group are coming from the U.S. government (54% of their funds), individual donors (35%), churches (5%), businesses and establishments (3%) and from foundations (3%). They also generate funds from their fundraising programs and other activities.

The organization was founded by Larry Ward in 1971. He has been actively helping out the refugees in Bangladesh, the Vietnamese people from the Red Sea and those victims of the 1972 Nicaragua earthquake.
