Food For the Poor is
one of the largest interdenominational relief and development organizations in
the United States. It was founded in 1982 by Ferdinand Mahfood and is now led
by Robin Mahfood. Aside from feeding the poor in 17 Caribbean and Latin
American countries, Food For The Poor provides health care, education, housing,
and emergency relief to these countries. The organization has stable funding.
According to a 2012 survey by Forbes Magazine, Food For The Poor is the 6th largest
recipient of private support.
Food For The Poor has many
beneficiaries for their programs. In Port-Au-Prince, at least two to three
thousand people line up in Food For The Poor’s feeding center to get food and
take it home to their families. Food For The Poor recognizes the reality that
poverty has no easy solution, so they take on a multi-layered approach in
combating it. Aside from providing nutritious meals, they also have medical
centers and micro-enterprise programs.
