Every human being has the right to be free – this is a basic necessity. Oppression, in all its forms, is unacceptable. Free the Slaves, an international, non-government organization based in Washington, D.C., is the world's largest lobby group fighting against slavery. Free the Slaves works in tandem with Anti-Slavery International, known as the world's oldest human rights group. Free the Slaves was established in light of research conducted by Dr. Kevin Bales regarding the role of modern-day slavery in today's economy. Free the Slaves recognizes the need for people to gain access to proper health services, education, self-sustaining economic means and proper implementation of laws in order for slavery to be completely abolished.

Free the Slaves believes that all people have the right to realize their true worth and potential, something that any form of slavery hinders. The organization uses a holistic approach, working with grassroots organizations around the world, recording and sharing stories, disseminating information, asking businesses and corporations to help, working with governments towards anti-slavery laws, researching on strategies to stop slavery and educating the rest of the world on slavery and its effects. Free the Slaves has videos, books and other forms of media available on the topic of slavery to encourage the public to join in the fight and effectively put an end to slavery once and for all.

The organization works in India, Ghana, Nepal, Congo, Haiti and Brazil, and has had the support of numerous celebrities and famous personalities such as singer-composer Jason Mraz, Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding, actor Ashton Kutcher and Actresses Demi Moore, Camilla Belle and Helena Christensen. Free the Slaves was founded by Kevin Bales, Peggy Callahan and Jolene Smith, and is led by Micheal Smith, Interim President and COO, a Board of Directors and Staff as well as a College Chapter Coordinator that reaches out to students interested in the cause.
