Founded in 1983, HelpHOPELive started as a non-profit organization dedicated to the addressing the healthcare needs of uninsured heart transplant patients in the Greater Philadelphia area via a system of community-based fundraising. While organ transplant procedures are now covered by insurance companies, patients who requested coverage were often met with resistance because the transplant procedures were considered as experimental at the time.

Over the years, HelpHOPELive slowly yet surely expanded its mission. The national non-profit organization now provides valuable assistance to two classes of patients – first, candidates of solid organ (e.g., heart, kidney, and liver), stem cell, and bone marrow transplants; and second, individuals who have catastrophic illnesses or injuries. By supporting community-based fundraising for these patients who usually have unmet medical expenses and related costs, the organization helps patients have hope in life and improve their quality of life usually in a tangible and meaningful way.

Since its creation 30 years ago, HelpHOPELive has raised funds and helped more than 2,600 patients receive transplants; covered more than $88 million in their unmet medical needs; and improved quality of life including restored independence for over 900 individuals with catastrophic injuries or illnesses.

HelpHOPELive also offers several advantages. A fundraising coordinator is assigned for each campaign so that the campaigners have competent and compassionate fundraising support. Each campaign is also eligible for foundation and corporation matching gifts and each one is also eligible for an incentive grant when the first fundraising goal is met. Since the funds raised in each campaign are not considered as assets or income for the concerned patient, his/her Medicaid status will not be jeopardized.

Individuals who want to start a HelpHOPELive campaign should use its online campaign request form or call its toll-free hotline (800.642.8399 FREE). HelpHOPELive will provide the fundraising coordinators, fundraising plans, and regional restricted fund, among others, as well as manages the funds raised, pays the bills directly, and performs weekly checks on the patients.
