In
a democratic society, we have been taught since early childhood that nobody is
above the law – not even law enforcers. Like anybody else, law enforcers can at
times get into situations wherein they would have to defend their actions in
the line of duty in front of a court of law. Unfortunately, the cost of
enlisting specialized defense counsels can be a bit more than a law enforcement
officer can afford.
The
Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund (LELDF) was founded by David Henderson Martin to assist
law enforcers during situations wherein they would need to defend themselves in
front of a court of law. The LELDF provides financial assistance, legal
counsel, and research services. Other than providing direct assistance to law
enforcement officers, the organization is also involved in educating government,
private institutions, and also the general public on the mission of law
enforcement to build respect for the law enforcement community.
The
LELDF relies solely on contributions from individuals and institutions that believe
in the mission of the organization.
