Access to
educational facilities is a major burden for the developing world. Many children in Africa are unable to attend
schools for lack of classrooms. In 2002,
a high school student from Harvard, Massachusetts named Kyla McKenna decided
she would do something about this situation. She put her plan into action and Build a School in Africa
was born. The
organization’s initial goal was to build a single school. They have long since surpassed that, building
ten schools over the past decade.
The price of a
new school building is roughly $100,000.
For a poor nation, this is an unattainable amount. However, working in conjunction with
benefactors in the developed world, the funds raised can be used to save and
change the lives of hundreds of children.
Build a School
for Africa works with other organizations to build these schools. Their goal is to raise between ten and twenty
thousand to help finance construction. Despite their past success, they realize
that they still have plenty of work ahead of them: in Mali alone, only 65% of students have a
school to attend.
