Originally created to combat polio, March of Dimes is now a non-profit organization that has been around to help out mothers and babies improve their health. This organization was created in 1938 by no other than the late president Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Headquartered in White Plains, New York, the organization has about 51 chapters across the United States. Preventing birth defects, infant mortality, and premature birth are their means of helping out mothers and their babies improve their health. March of Dimes started out as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Its current name was originally used during their annual fundraising wherein they ask every child to donate a dime for their cause. After the organization won the battle against polio, then president Basil O’Connor urged his staff to channel their resources to another mission otherwise they will be forced to disband. It was in the mid-60s that they started focusing their efforts in the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality.

As of late, March of Dimes is listed on the Forbes as the 54th Largest US Charity. Their mission revolves around the assistance of making mothers have full term pregnancies and researching probable causes of healthcare issues of newborns.
