You would be surprised what you can accomplish if your idea is less
than perfect but your heart is in the right place. This is what happened when the Reverend Ray
S. Wilkie, a Lutheran minister, made a missionary trip to Latvia and Russia
back in 1992. These were countries that
had just witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union and were now in desperate
need of food and basic goods. The
reverend envisioned a train that would go across the American heartland and
gather food to ship to those in need.
From this vision, Orphan
Grain Train was born.
Although his idea of a train that was loaded up with food and supplies
was not workable, his idea for gathering food was. He contacted Clayton Andrews, CEO of Andrew
Van Lines, and asked about the concept. Andrews’s
response, without hesitation, was “yes.”
The idea was to share the largess that America now has with both its
food and supplies with countries around the world. They also wanted to assist in relief efforts
for Americans who have endured natural disasters. There is no doubt that the vision has
worked. They have delivered 63 million
pounds of supplies to people in 60 different countries through 18 different
branches. As Rev. Wilkie and Mr. Andrews
showed, you would be surprised what you can accomplish with a yes.
