National Breast Cancer Coalition: Advocacy for Breast Cancer

May 1, 2015

Public policy changes society and, in turn, groups, families and individuals. With this in mind, the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) works toward the improvement of public policies regarding breast cancer research including its diagnosis, treatment and management.

The non-profit organization is one of the leading grassroots advocacy organizations in the industry. Its status is partly due to its active participation in the communities where breast cancer patients and survivors as well as their families are based. Founded in 1991, the coalition has members from diverse cohorts including breast cancer support groups, women’s health organizations, and information and service groups, among others.

Today, NBCC is known for its Breast Cancer Deadline 2020, an ambitious call to action for researchers, policymakers, and breast cancer advocates including patients and survivors, among other stakeholders, to eradicate breast cancer by 1 January 2020. The organization is also well-known for its strong support of evidence-based medicine, medical consumerism model, and research into the environmental causes and prevention of the disease.

Ovarian Cancer Research Fund: Giving Hope to Women with Ovarian Cancer

March 31, 2015
Among the different gynecologic cancers, ovarian cancer kills the most women every year. The main reason for this is because, more often than not, the diagnosis of this type of cancer is made during the later stages of the disease when the cancer has metastasized to the rest of the pelvic region. In fact, only 20% of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed in the early stages. Advances in medical technology have already increased the lifespan of women with late-stage ovarian cancer; however, the l...
