Founded in 1949, Children of Bellevue (CoB) is among the United States’ most prominent non-profit organizations dedicated to the well-being, health and welfare of children specifically at the Bellevue Hospital Center. Through the years, the men and women behind CoB have been passionate advocates for the pediatric patients and their families at the medical facility with special focus on alleviating the adverse mental effects resulting from their hospitalizations. The organization also works toward school readiness of children at risk of falling behind their academic performance due to family poverty.

All of CoB’s programs and projects are funded solely through philanthropic donations made by people from all walks of life. The professional organization has a stellar reputation for spending most of its donations on its programs and projects, which are focused on the developing, funding and providing effective therapies, innovative services, and provocative research designed to benefit children nationwide.

Among CoB’s core programs are:

• The Child Protection and Development program establishes protocols that protect children from neglect, abuse and other forms of maltreatment. Its main venue is the Frances L. Loeb Center for Child Protection and Development at Bellevue Hospital Center where physically and sexually abused children are evaluated and treated by a multidisciplinary protection team. Its staff members consist of pediatricians, social workers, nurses, psychologists, and child development specialists.

• The Child Life and Development program aims to set the nationwide standard in pediatric care. Child life specialists provide young patients and their families with the tools and techniques to successfully cope with the pain, stress and fear associated with their illnesses and their medical treatments including hospitalization. These specialists also educate administrators, providers and the general public about the ways that children and adolescents deal with their emotions during this difficult time.

• The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program pioneers total care for the whole child instead of just focusing on the illness.

Indeed, CoB works for the benefit of sick children and their families!
