Room to Read, a non-profit organization,
works toward the improvement of literacy and gender equality in ten countries
in Africa and Asia including South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia. Its vision:
Change the world by providing quality education for children, one literate
reader at a time.
The San Francisco-based
organization continues to enjoy great success in its endeavors partly due to
its effective, efficient and responsive collaborations with partner
organizations, local communities, and governments where it operates. Its
programs focus on developing literacy skills (e.g., reading and writing) and on
encouraging a love for reading among primary school children. Furthermore, it
supports girls in their completion of their secondary school education while
providing them with relevant life skills for success.
Indeed, Room to Read provides
children in Asia and Africa with the knowledge and skills crucial in their success
in life. The ability to read and write, after all, can mean the difference
between poverty and progress for these children and their families.
