Considered a nondenominational
evangelical Christian humanitarian organization, Samaritan’s Purse was founded in
1970 by Bob Pierce. He met Franklin Pierce who thereafter became the president
of the organization after Pierce’s death in 1978.
Pierce, who
founded the World Vision in 1950, envisioned Samaritan’s Purse “to be in crisis
areas and meet emergency needs through existing national churches and
evangelical mission agencies”. True enough, the organization started their
large-scale relief programs including medical care assistance in Somalia in
1993, in Rwanda in 1994, rebuilding of houses during Hurricane Mitch in1998,
Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
This
humanitarian organization operates in 100 countries and has a total revenue of
$385 million. To be prepared to help out in any emergency crisis, they have
supplies pre-positioned in warehouses around the world.
The organization
not only provides physical aid to those who are hurting but also the spiritual
guidance to people around the world. By following the example of Jesus in the
parable of the Good Samaritan, this charitable institution aims to pay it
forward.
