Formed in 2003 and incorporated in 2005, the
nonprofit CKC organization joins CyberKnife providers across the United States,
including freestanding centers and hospitals, in a commitment to expand patient
access to the technology, image-guided robotic stereotactic radiosurgery. CyberKnife
combines computers, image-guided systems, and robotics to target a tumor from
various angles in concentrated, cumulative doses while minimizing the exposure
to healthy tissues surrounding the growth. Through CKC, providers can share
their experience in addressing protocols, efficacy, payer and reimbursement
issues, and other matters.
CKC also collects data on CyberKnife treatments
and works with stakeholders to facilitate patient access. The organization has
engaged in numerous efforts in support of the adoption of coverage, payment,
and appropriate coding for CyberKnife treatments. In addition, CKC regularly
provides information related to the technology and its treatments to commercial
payers, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality of the United States Department of Health and
Human Services, and other evaluation bodies.
