Founded by Irene M. Auberlin in 1953, World Medical Relief has grown from an informal effort to help a Korean War orphan into a non-profit, multi-funded charitable organization with a global reach. From its headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, the organization considers itself as world-class beggar with a noble purpose – or in the words of its founder, turning the sins of waste into modern miracles of mercy and, in the process, performing God’s work.

World Medical Relief works toward making a positive impact on the well-being of impoverished people on the local, national, and international basis. Its donors contribute both monetary and in-kind donations including medical, dental, and laboratory products while the organization also purchases and distributes these items as the need arises. Its beneficiaries avail of these goods in a non-discriminatory manner while also ensuring that the distributions will deliver the most cost-efficient, results-effective, and beneficiary-responsive outcomes.

In line with its goal of becoming one of God’s instruments in alleviating the suffering of disadvantaged people, World Medical Relief has established partnerships with other organizations as well as made advances in its scope of work. In 1966, for example, it was granted a pharmacy license in the State of Michigan that allowed it to deliver an effective prescription medication assistance program for the state’s low-income senior citizens.

In 2010, World Medical Relief assumed responsibility for the blanket program for homeless people in Metropolitan Detroit after the American Red Cross Southeastern Chapter gave it up. The program was renamed as the Blanket Relief for Area Shelters.

Nonetheless, the goals of World Medical Relief has essentially remained unchanged. Its goals include the relief of human suffering; the demonstration of respect for its patients, clients, and donors; the collaboration with community-based organizations in providing appropriate services for those in need; and the adoption of a proactive approach in improving its services.
