amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is an international nonprofit organization that works to support projects and programs involving and benefiting HIV/AIDS research, prevention, treatment, and education. They also advocate sound AIDS-related public policy.

The foundation’s history can be traced back to the 1980s, when a group of scientists and researchers, including Mathilde Krim, Ph.D., organized an informal study group with the aim of investigating the condition that have come to be known as AIDS. In 1983, Dr. Krim, together with other doctors and researchers, established the AIDS Medical Foundation. Meanwhile, the National AIDS Research Foundation was also developed in Los Angeles. In September 1985, these two foundations merged, forming the “american foundation for AIDS Research,” thus the more popular name amfAR.

Since its establishment, amfAR has been supporting innovative research into HIV prevention and treatment. It provides funding to researchers, also enabling young researchers to establish a career in the study of the disease.
