FIAN International, formerly known as Food First Information and Action Network, is a human rights organization that has been advocating for the realization of the right to food. The international organization has been working on its mission for over 25 years, consisting of national sections and individual members across 50 countries worldwide. It is classified as non-profit, with no religious or political affiliation. It also maintains consultative status to the United Nations.

The organization’s mission is to expose any form of violations against people’s right to food, wherever they occur. FIAN stands up against oppressive and unfair practices that keep people from feeding themselves and their families. Gender discrimination and other related forms of exclusion also make for an integral part of the organization’s mission. FIAN continually strives to secure people’s access to resources that they need for them to be able to acquire food, in the present and in the future.

Furthermore, the organization also documents and analyzes concrete cases of violations against the right to food. It works to raise awareness on the said right among non-governmental organizations, social movements, and governmental entities. It also responds to various requests coming from victim groups and parties whose right to food is threatened or violated, mobilizing support. FIAN also exerts public pressure through protest letter campaigns, recourse to the law, and advocacies in order to hold governments accountable for the violations of the right. The organization also makes it a point to follow up on cases until the victims get proper attention and justice. Moreover, within the UN system as well as other legal regimes, FIAN promotes respect of human rights, leading to the strengthening and improvement of the international human rights protection.

In 2005, two members of the FIAN Section Germany staff was given the Silver Rose Award for exhibiting commitment to the rights of the workers in the flower industry. In 2006, FIAN and two other partners received the Public Eye on Davos – Positive Award.
