The Wilderness Society was formed in 1935 for the purpose of protecting America’s shared wild lands from destruction and conversion into commercial, residential, or industrial land. The organization believes that preserving these natural gems not only give people a place for recreation and solitude, but it is also the foundation of having a healthy planet.

The organization has successfully protected over 100 acres of wilderness across 44 US states since then. The pieces of land the organization was able to protect include the desserts of the Southwest, the forests in the Pacific Northwest, the snowcapped mountains in the Rockies, the hardwood forests in the East Coast, and the Tundra in Alaska just to name a few.

Some of the biggest achievements of The Wilderness Society were the passing of the Wilderness Act in 1964 the filing of a landmark bill in 2009 which aims to protect millions of acres of public wild lands all over the country.
